The beauty of travelling in Europe is that you’re pretty much guaranteed to come across every Tom, Dick and Harry. Harking from such a variety of countries, it’s more likely to be every José, André and Boris! However, swiping right on Tinder in Europe might require a bit more effort if your perfect match doesn’t speak the same language! So until you develop the language of love, here’s a few tips on how to flirt in local languages. It’s important to note that Google Translate is your new BFF. Patience and a willingness to make a fool of yourself is also essential.
Spanish
Let’s start with something simple… to refer to someone as ‘my love’ then ‘mi amor’ is the words you’re looking for. Guapo (or guapa, for girls) is one way to say beautiful but if you’re wanting to show advanced Spanish skills in the club, lead with ‘Hace calor aqui, o eres tu?’ which translates as ‘Is it hot in here, or is it just you?’ Once you’ve got the hang of the basics and want to up the flirting game and lay on the charm give this phrase a shot: ‘Si besarte fuera pecado, caminaría feliz por el infierno’ (‘If kissing you were a sin, I’d happily walk through hell.’) If that doesn’t work, I don’t know what will!
French
For us English speakers, the world of romance languages can seem daunting but also so intriguing. There’s always different male and female articles and it can get quite complicated to the average ear. French is one of the most romantic sounding languages in my opinion! Guys, if you happen upon a classy French woman sipping coffee on the sidewalk, you could start a conversion with ‘bonjour’, but follow up with ‘tu es tres jolie’ (‘you are very pretty’) for added effect. Ladies, your turn to pipe up with ‘tu es tres beau’ (‘you are very handsome’). If you’ve got a connection and ready to move up to the next level and ask someone to kiss you then the words you need are ’embrasse-moi’, either that or you could just go for it!
German
You’re at Oktoberfest in Munich, you’ve just been separated from your buds and found yourself in a predominantly German tent with plenty of locals. Seeing as this is pretty much Disneyland for adults, why not delay the search for your wayward friends and sit down with some strangers. A good starting point, seeing as you are in a beer hall after all is ‘willst du ein bier?’ or ‘want to get a beer?’ No sane person would say no to that, especially with the quality Bavarian beer on offer. Now that you’ve made a connection, spent the day together, ridden some rollercoasters and shared a pork knuckle, in your inebriated state you might want to say I love you. In German this is said ‘Ich liebe dich’. If you’re ever in a spot and forget, just have a look at any McDonald’s packaging. Seeing as their slogan is ‘I’m loving it’, this will hopefully prompt your memory. ‘Willst du mit mir gehan?’ might get you a first date because it’s you asking ‘do you want to go out with me?’ While you’re on this date and it’s (hopefully) going well you can finish it off with a honest confession of ‘I’m into you’ with ‘Ich Steh’ auf dich.’
Italian
Thanks to the movie industry worldwide we should all know the familiar cat call, ‘ciao bella!’ But in case you’ve been living under a rock, this means ‘hello beautiful!’ Ladies, expect to hear this called out as you’re walking down the street anywhere in Italy! If you happen to meet an Italian stallion who makes you breathless you can express these sentiments with ‘hai tolto il mio fiato’, literally ‘you took my breath away.’ To get right to the point, be bold in the bedroom because the Italians have the perfect word for the moment: ‘spogliati’, to state the obvious and tell your lover to take your clothes off! However if that’s a little too much of a Casanova move and you’d rather romance with your words you can say ‘Where have you been all my life?’ with ‘Dove sei stato tutta la mia vita?’ If you’re speaking to the ladies be sure to say ‘stata’ instead of ‘stato’ in the above sentence.
