If you’re anything like me and every Valentine’s Day looks like an opportunity to be scoffing chocolate and bingeing Netflix shows, it might be time to make some last minute impulsive travel plans. What better way to stave off the parental enquiries into your love life than by making an impromptu trip to Asia? Here’s why Thailand waits for no man (or woman)!
Temples in Caves… temple caves!
You read that right, yes, a temple inside a cave. If this doesn’t already sound like some kind of magic Disney dream, please refer to picture below/above. Khao Sam Roi Yot may be a bit of a mouthful but I can assure you, this National Park is an absolute treasure. You can be forgiven for feeling a bit Indiana Jones while scrambling up crumbling stone steps to reach the cave. When it opens up below you, the massive caverns do not disappoint. Open to the sky with plenty of trees clinging to the side, stalactites and stalagmites forming before your eyes and the signatures from two kings carved into to the rock this is some serious adventurer stuff! A temple sits in the centre mound of the main chamber and if you time it just right, the sun beam shines right on the roof, giving it a spiritual elevation.
Unicorn Café, Bangkok… magical treats
Unicorns are not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Bangkok but if you are a fan of this mythical beast, this is truly something you have to add to your bucket list. Rainbows, pastels, glitter… it has everything you would expect and more. Time to get magical in the Bang Rak district of Bangkok. This café truly is a unique stop with plush unicorns to cuddle, foods that are either a myriad of colours or contain some kind of edible horn. Think rainbow waffles, fairy floss milkshakes and cheeseburgers with a unicorn horn. Selfies encouraged. Unicorn onesies optional.
Ko Lanta… you time
Jump onto our Thai Island Flexi Hopper West for this slice of island paradise. Get away from some of the more touristy areas of Phi Phi Island to nearby islands of Ko Lanta for white sandy beaches. Here you’ll find more space on the beach and calm enough waters to get out your inflatable flamingo! With more of a relaxed vibe, there is still plenty places to party if you’re feeling like finding a dance partner or bonding over beverages with some of the longer staying residents.
Koh Pha Ngan… get wild!
This one may seem a little obvious. It’s well known for one of the most spectacular parties in the world and for good reason! Heaving, sweating masses of people all jam packed onto an island… you’ve lost your shoes and a couple of mates in the crowd but you’ve also made some new friends, consumed many colourful drinks and hopped between so many bars, that you haven’t kept track. Lights and pumping music, this glow in the dark rave is known as the Full Moon Party. Feel free to theme dress or just adorn yourself with glow paint! Party as late (or early) as you want, the beach is waiting for you tomorrow!
Wat Rong Khun… the White Temple
Part art, part history, wholly wondrous. Fall in love with this wonderfully over the top recreation of the original Wat Rong Khun. Probably one of Chiang Rai’s most photographed buildings and we have a local artist to thank who is painfully recreating the original temple. Very deserving of your attention, this masterpiece is unbelievably still not finished and will not be until 2070! Take time for a bit of meditation and self-reflection on what a good job you’ve done booking a trip to Thailand.
